Adding a Newborn to Your Health Insurance

February 1, 2026

Having a baby triggers a Special Enrollment Period, giving you 60 days to add your newborn to your existing health plan or enroll in a new plan. Your newborn is covered from the date of birth, even before you officially add them, as long as you complete enrollment within the 60-day window.

Steps to Add Your Baby

If You Have an ACA Marketplace Plan

  1. Log into Healthcare.gov (or your state exchange) within 60 days of birth
  2. Report the life change (new baby)
  3. Update your household size (this may increase your subsidy)
  4. Choose to add baby to current plan or switch plans
  5. Provide documentation (birth certificate, hospital records)

If You Have Employer Insurance

  1. Notify your employer's HR department within 30 days (some plans allow 60)
  2. Complete enrollment forms
  3. Coverage is retroactive to the birth date

Costs to Expect

Adding a child to a marketplace plan typically increases premiums by $100-$300/month, though increased subsidies often offset much of this cost. On employer plans, adding a dependent usually costs $100-$250/month. Costs vary by state and plan.

Don't Miss the Deadline

The 60-day window is firm. If you miss it, you'll need to wait until the next Open Enrollment to add your child (with some exceptions). Mark the date and act early.
